Potato Variety that is resistant to Blight
« on: September 22, 2007, 21:59 »
Hi,

On our site this season a great many of us had Potato Blight with our main crop spuds.

Can anyone recommend any varieties of spuds that are resistant to blight?

Thanks FB

Sarpo Mira.

They are thick skinned as wel, so the slugs can't get in them!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Have you grown Sarpo Mira Digger?  What are they like, taste and quantity wise?  Any good?

I thought I might try some next year, as I had all that blight too!!!

I've grown Sarpo Mira, good multi-purpose, decent flavour, no the best to my liking, but Ok.
On the stronger side, little slug or other damage, and who cares when you get 20 odd tubers under each of them. Uneven sized mind. Very little if any blight damage on tubers.
I'm trying sarpo axona out this year.  Also, there are a few oldies with the ultimate flavour (to me ), that will tolerate blight somewhat, Sante and Cara, also Charlotte(sold for salad but bulks up nicely for multi, main use, makes good mash). Valor does grow very well, little flavour, I'm afraid.
Marshall's is new on me, I'm buying the Sarpos from thompson&morgan.

Some Hungarian researchers developed it, but the enterprise(probably funded and bought out, etc.) is supervised by some Welsh Uni and guy nowadays. Details on thompson &morgan website.

Yes I have and do Grannie. Can't add too much to what gobs has said about them, except I found my tubers were quite even in size. Yes the flavour is probably not the best, but whilst I did not suffer from blight I suffered from slugs, they are also very slug resistant.

I experimented with a few different varieties this year and for my rewards I got tubers riddled with holes. I am willing to sacrifice a bit of flavour to actually get a storeable crop!

This is what the well respected Medwyn Williams had to say about them on the well respected NVS site....

 Sarpo Mira

At £4.49 for 20 tubers from T & M - they can whistle. £1 a kilo from our local nursery.

I grew sarpo axona last year and it was a good sized and shaped potato but a bit tastless.Charlotte stood out this year, lthough dug up early we had a good crop of good sized potatoes and only a few tubers that showed blight and definatly good for flavour.(11kg/10 tubers)
