You lost out on both counts re the cabbage and onion, WG. They both contain sulphur. One possible way to reduce the sulphur in the cabbage is to use some parsley with it - the chlorophyll helps neutralize acidic sulphur.  Not sure how it'll taste, but it should work in theory.

My Mum used to put bicarbonate of soda n with her cabbage as it kept it a nice green colour, but what she didn't realise and I only found out after I was an adult, is that it also takes all the goodness out of the cabbage!!!!

I think it kills the vitamin C Annie.

Add a pinch of bicarb of soda in water with cabbage if you like it soft accordingto Nigella!

To avoid a smelly kitchen when cooking cauliflower, add a little milk to the cooking water, it really does work or cook half a lemon in the cauli water with the cauli of course.  My mum used to recommend these.

The onion trick she swore by for paint smells...apparently it's supposed to absorb the fumes...how i don't know but it does work.

Why would you want to boil cabbage, much better steamed. My gran added bicarb to cabbage and sugar to peas to retain the colour.

Thought it was interesting that Nigella had said this.

Personally, I always steam my cabbage and it's superb....never added bicarb of soda to any boiling water...not that i boil a lot.

Onions and Paint
I read that about paint and onions.  It said place a cut up onion in each corner of the room. I did this when we redecorated 2 years ago and the room didnot smell of paint, but the onions are beginning to stink now.
