liquid feed
« on: March 08, 2017, 10:11 »
I bought some 8-8-8 liquid fertilizer the other day and was wondering if it is a good idea to use a weak mix to water veg seedlings that have been thinned out? Thinking about my onions and lettuce which are in smallish modules.

Jambob, I put one drop of Baby Bio, admittedly full strength, on my onion seedlings and it killed them all stone dead, if I were you I'd wait until the seedlings go out into the ground before feeding them. Just my opinion, but I learnt the hard way, (is there another?)

You mean completely undiluted Baby Bio?

Mine thrived on properly diluted Baby Bio while they were inside, but now they are on a general purpose liquid vegetable feed in the greenhouse - just because that is what it out there ready to dilute and use.

If onions are in modules for a while, they use up the nutrients in the compost and do need regular feeding.  If they have recently gone into modules, they will be in fresh compost, so that will last them a few weeks.

My thought was that the compost they were thinned into was fairly cheap and that there would be little nutrients in there so a weak mix of liquid fertilizer would help them on their way. But two entirely different outcomes is a worry! I won't plant out for another 5 weeks or so, so I really think they will need some feed?

Baby Bio is meant to be diluted 5-10 drops per pint of water.  I just used it because I have it under the sink for ferns and other houseplants, it saves me traipsing out to the greenhouse for liquid feed and it works.

If liquid feed killed plants, sales would be pretty dismal  ;)

So!, I have this little bottle and I put 10 drops into a 1 litre bottle and use that to feed the seedlings after approx 1 month, is that correct please,
note to self, "read the instructions"

Aaah, all becomes clear.  Yes that is correct.

If you dripped Baby Bio in neat, that would have been rather an overdose of feed  ;)

Oh well, chalk it down to experience and start again.  Plenty of time yet to get some more onions going  :)
