Amaryllis Hippeastrum Minerva
« on: May 06, 2014, 09:24 »
Morning everyone. ::)
My other half was given a Amaryllis Hippeastrum Minerva for Christmas which did brilliant. After it had finished flowering we decided to try & keep it so we followed the instructions that came with it but it has sent up 2 shoots of foliage which are about 12"/18" tall now. Is it supposed to do this ? We thought it would just go dormant for a few months  ??? As we didn't know what it was before she opened it the parcel got tipped over & some of the compost fell out so it needs topping up as a lot of the bulb is uncovered but what compost is best to use ?
Many thanks in advance  ;)

The bulb will send up leaves as it flowers or just after flowering, this is normal. It needs to replenish the energy used up flowering.

Once all frosts have passed it can be put outside in a sunny spot in it's pot or in the soil, keep slug free (they will munch the bulb) and feed all summer.

Around September I think, bring it in, trim leaves and let it go dryish and dormant for around 8 weeks, repot and it will hopefully flower again.

I have always used average potting compost and liquid feed.

I hope others know a bit more.

Spottymint has it just right.

This gives your lovely bulb the chance to develop a new flowering shoot for the end of the year.

Love love these houseplants! Such a splash of amazing colour in the dead and cold of Winter, apparently Amaryllis are really easy to keep from one year to the next, and to get re-flowering but I have an awful time with them. The bulbs rot, the leaves yellow far to quickly, or they just go crazy and fall all over the place like the daffs out in the garden. Often end up with many offsets! But they are tiny and never reflower  :lol: . Normally good with houseplants, but this is one that defeats me everytime so I tend to treat them as annuals to prevent heartache when they fail!
