Loverrrly time at the potato day!
« on: January 28, 2012, 18:36 »
Ooooh I've had a BRILLIANT day!

Apart from the obvious, the spuds, I had a lovely time because I met up with GAVINCONWAY from off here  :)  We sat and had a 'post-purchase' cuppa together and  we chatted away about lotties to our hearts content  :D even Mrs Conway and my little Jacob enjoyed it too.

Right...well I only went to have a peep at what a Potato Day actually was, and buy JUST A COUPLE.  Hmmmm... :nowink: Well as you can imagine I was thrilled at the prices  (£1.50 a bag, at least a dozen healthy seeds in each) and to a newbie like myself they appeared to have every potato imaginable.  Although I did notice the more common names had sold out fairly soon.

I bought SEVEN bags!!!  Whoops, hee hee.  I'll have to give away what I can't fit on my plot, or I could plant some in containers at home if needs be.

Right, here's the list...I made my selection in true girlie style and was swayed by pretty names  ::) LOL!!

First Earlies:
Duke of York
Lady Christl
Maris Bard
2nd Earlies:
Bonnie
Kestrel
Maris Peer
and I was rather excited to get some Pink Fir Apple too  :)

I hope I did OK... NO idea if they're suitable for my plot/location/experience and I only went over my £10 spending money by a little bit.

So...there you go. Sorry you couldn't all come along. x

Gavin you're a cheeky so and so!  :tongue2:  I'm worried about me mixing my varieties up so goodness knows how you'll manage. Glad you had a good day out, lovely weather for it. x

Sunshine, I was worried I wouldn't be able to recognise him when we got there so he told me he would be wearing a rather bright hat.... I thought it was going to be a 'Where's Wally?' moment but I found the dayglo headgear instantly, hee hee. x

Awww...Solway  :( but at least you won't be tempted to chit and plant too soon if it's a little later, we were worried about when to start them off but were advised to just start them off now.  They're all in my lounge now, set out with the labels on!  They'd make lovely ornaments don't you think, hee hee! x

too warm in the lounge, I would think.

They need cool and light...............if they're in the warm they'll get long sprouts too early :(

I agree.

As cosy as your home may be, spuds won't like it.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh no...  ???
Where can I put them?  The window they're in is a west facing bay window (3 sided) and has no blinds or curtains in it...I should be ashamed to tell you that I took the old blinds down 2 years ago to make some new ones and, well, um, they're still not made  ::) so it's a bit draughty round that area.  Do you think it's still too warm? Ooooohhhh, where can they go?  Bloomin 'eck! LOL. xxx

Do you have a Northerly facing window sill? Mine get chitted at the far end of my kitchen, which is huge, on a North facing window sill, by the back door. It doesn't get too warm that end.

Anywhere that is guaranteed frost free and very light will do. You don't want it warm to chit them

Do you have a shed with a window? If so, you could move them to there. This is what we do at school as there are no cold places indoors.

At home though they are in my greenhouse at the cold end

Mine chit slowly and steadily for months on end on the windowsill of my bedroom, which has double glazing, is north facing, and is heated, but to a lower temperature than the living areas of the house.

The two things to avoid are frost, and a combination of warmth and darkness (that's what results in long white chits - in my experience it's the light that stops that happening rather than very cool temperatures.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Surely so. If they get frozen, that's much much worse.
