i am also very sorry to hear of your loss. i have only just found this thread and a very sad story it is too. I had to have my dog put to sleep last year and it was a very difficult decision but i like you was not willing to see my "baby" suffer. please draw strength from that. none of us lets our pets down by stopping their suffering, it is the last act of kindness we can do for them. we can now talk about milo and a big smile will appear on our faces i hope you and your family will be in the same position soon. thinking of you.
