Drought, Flood and now a plague.
« on: July 17, 2010, 22:19 »
Does anyone have any Israelites I can set free ?

First it was the blackfly, then the greenfly and now its caterpillars eating my tomatoes ! Not just the odd bite but stripping leaves to the ribs and making holes in the fruit.

If this keeps up I'll be adding famine to the list !  ::)

Nice thought but I for one would rather eat the tomatoes I'm growing than look at pretty butterflies

Having ingested the odd one or two over the years I'd say you'd need to eat a good handful to get a real idea of the taste.

When I was a kid I remember arguing with my brother and sister about who could have the biggest strawberry.  Dad solved the argument by taking it off us and biting in to it.  He thought it tasted a bit funny then looked at the remaining half to see half a very big caterpillar.
Even now I have to break my strawberries in half before I can eat them!

For the next couple of years we still argued over who should have the biggest strawberry but with all of us wanting someone else to have it!  We learnt a valuable lesson about sharing!!!

..I must be stoopid then  :(  (something I've refused to believe for years)..cos I actually paid to eat some... in a restaurant.. and a posh one at that.

In my defence it was in South Africa, where beer is strong n cheap and it was part of ingesting every animal featured in  the Lion King. They called them Mopane Worms..not exactly appetising..and unsurprisingly they tasted like &*^% ..plus they were charred.

Yep..I am really thick...

Several of them met a nasty end, and I can honestly say I had / have no desire to consume any. I pretty happy limiting my carnivorous habit to vertebrates.

... where beer is strong n cheap....

If I had a £ for every time I've used that old excuse  ::)  :D

best flash-fried then beaten egg of whatever type you can forage into a sort of rough omelette.  Not terribly appetising but is usable protein.

Avoid the hairy ones if possible, and worms are better than caterpillars anyway.

Would you like some locusts, Lardman? I've seen quite a few this year...

Last time I looked they were arthropods  ::)

Anyone care to ID the culprit ? I can't say I've ever been bothered by them on tomatoes before, they're becoming a problem this year.

Although it wasn't me that ate this, I now know a very appreciative blackbird.
