Suggestions please - worn out cotton clothes
« on: October 13, 2009, 17:34 »
Any suggestions for uses for worn out cotton clothes? Shirts and some pairs of trousers - holes are worn through them so they can't go to a charity shop but it seems a bit of a waste to just turn them into dusters and frankly I just don't do that much dusting!

Any suggestions gratefully received,

Thanks

James

If they are cotton they will make compost...don't know how long they would take but will rot down :)

I could do with them as painting and decorating clothes. :D
Probably far more presentable than fishnet tights and a pokemon t shirt.

I always cut my old work shirts into squares and use them in the workshop for wiping my hands and cleaning up

As mumofstig says above, chuck them on the compost heap.
If you have the time, maybe when you are idling in front of the TV, cut the items into smaller pieces which will help speed up the composting process.
Wool or cotton will normally degrade in 12 months or less in any half decent compost heap.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.

How about stuffing a shirt and pair of trousers with straw or dried leaves and making a scarecrow?

I use all my old cotton clothes as rags in the workshop.
Paper towels are ok, but you just can't beat an old oily rag.....(and you can start bonfires with 'em ;))

Some recycling facilities take rags/worn out clothing in a special bin.  They have a different one that they take clothes for the Salvation Army.

When we sorted out MILs house after she died there were plenty of īragsī ie very old fashioned clothing and tatty stuff she had hoarded, the charity shops took them as they sold on the rags to the īrag manī

If you have dogs - a pet bed may be a good idea? I use and old duvet cut to size & re-sewn up then stuffed with things like you have. Can be washed a few times then thrown away if need be.
