I discovered the free Starbucks coffee grounds thing today.
I now have a car boot full of bags of the stuff.

Haven't got a clue what to do with it all, but it was free and I got excited.

Only popped in to use their loo.

I always use the loos in McDs nothing else worth going in for, and nothing for free

I wanted to 'go' in Venice a few years ago and was 'relieved' to find McDs there as well

My American sister in law calls McD's the international chain of bathrooms, which I think is 'loo' in our language.

But what do I do with all this used ground coffee??

The kind lady in Starbucks said it would repel slugs?

I've used it as a mulch around my poorly leeks, it's high in nitrogen which leeks like apparently, no sign of slugs either, but don't think they go for leeks

This year when planting out the first few sowings of lettuce I liberally mulched the whole planting area with saved and dried out coffee grounds as someone said it would help. The vast majority made it to maturity unslugged. Later plantings when I couldn't be bothered (yeah, serves me right) were hit by the usual levels of slugmunch.

Since read in all sorts of places that it does or doesnt work, with the weight seeming to be on the doesnt side. Ho hum, must have been blind luck then. But..... I am deffo going to use coffee grounds again all round the plot next year and see if the more I use the luckier I may get!

I had real problems with slugs in my cold frame this year - munched the tops out of my baby cabbages that were growing in there and didnt do the seedling onions any favours. Where my husband works they have a machine that makes proper coffee (posh eh!), so we have provided a bin for the coffee grounds and once a week he brings it home to be emptied. The plan is that during the winter we will make a thick bed of coffee grounds in the bottom of the cold frame and hopefully we wont get the same issue next year.

What do you think? Will it work?

Not sure what happens if we get caffine addicted cabbage - will it run to seed?

We use grounds from the cafetiere (when we think about it so not always

) around plants against slugs.

I was told to use it between rows of carrots; the smell over powers the carrot smell!

It should barrioer against slugs the same way that soot or ash does, they don't like going over very gritty substrates as they have to use a lot of extra slime to do it.... I put soot roiund my spring cabbages and caulis and no sign of slugmunch ....
