bokky's 1st egg? Another problem!
« on: October 23, 2008, 16:51 »
this afternoon Bokky (blackrock) went into the hen house after half hour she re appeared so had a look in nest box! empty but warm, I noticed her straining so picked her up and took her in hen house with me and shut us in 30 seconds later she laid her first egg in front of me whilst standing up? thought it didnt look right and when i picked it up it was soft  Should i keep an eye on her over the next few days? as the tail bit of the egg looks like some is missing!
thinks her guardian angel`s gone on strike !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aww I think the latest offering from my first brood of the year is a double yolker, it certainly looks big enough ;)

Ok Well Bokky laid her 2nd egg today it was tiny and can only assume that it was thwe 2nd bit to the first soft shelled one, it had a hard shell and weighed in at 26g    the problem is though that she spent an hour in the nest box but then came out at popped it out in front of the patio doors!!??? luckily i was there as Tilly made a lunge for it and i got to it first! worried as this is the 2nd egg she hasnt laid in the nest?? do you think it was because it was so small she thought it was a false alarm and that she is only 20 wks?? Dont want egg eating chooks as well as feather peckers! :?
Heres a pic left to right Nugget, Roastie, Paxo, Tillys 1st egg and then Bokkys 2nd Its no bigger than a quails egg and i assume it is one big yolk!

Hi CL
Looks to me like Bokkys laid a wind egg, nothing to worry about they happen, more than likely have no yolk :(

She is still very young, do you have any false eggs in the nest boxes to show them where to lay they help, I'm certain she will get the hang of it :)

Sounds like she just hasn't got the timing right
One of mine does come running out of the nest box if she hears me go out side, I think she's frightened of missing out on a treat
She goes back once she's seen what's going on :)

Or maybe she wanted to make sure you found it, with it only being small you might have missed it in the nest box so delivered it on the door step instead

Sarah :)
