Too early to plant out onion sets?
« on: February 28, 2012, 15:34 »
Hi folks

Up in Scotland here, and it's hard to know what to do as we've had no snow this winter in my part, and the last week broke recent records for the mildest Feb. If I plant out my onion sets now (with a cloche cover) am I being too ambitious?

Many thanks

Boog

I reckon you'd get away with it, they're next on my list after a bit of tidying & pruning.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

mine have started to shoot in the greenhouse too - so they will be going in within the next couple of weeks!that'll hopefully give me enough time to dig over enough space for my 250 sets!

It is nearly March after all, and as you say a mild February... the ground will be warmer than usual

I was hoping to put mine in this weekend but was worring I may be a bit early, I covered the ground with a cloche 2 weeks ago so ground should be warm, and I started them off in the heated green house a few weeks ago . All have at least 3/4 inches of green growth on so roots should be well formed, so going by what  everyone on here says they are definatly going in this weekend :)

Hi Loobs,

If you have been growing yours in a heated green house you need to start hardening them off first, you cannot just plant them out from the warm to the plot.

I've got some sturton and red sun Shallots from wilkos, how far apart should I plant them, there seems to be hundreds of them and worry they will take up too much space
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

i think its a spread hands distance between each set, mine grew quite large last year - just think how big they are going to eventually grow!

Plant them about four to five inches apart, just enough so you can hoe between easily, they hate being crowded by weeds.

The closer you plant them the smaller they'll grow. Depends how big you want your onions.

I've planted them at three inches apart and still had perfectly usable onions.

What makes onion sets bolt? Will sets planted early bolt if we get a cold spell?

well they say that onion sets are more prone to bolting compared to seeds grown plants  - but last year i never had any bolt. just keep them well watered!
