In an ideal world you have a couple of rotorvaters/tillers. Started with a secondhand mantis. This is a tiller, not a rotorvater. It is excellent for creating a perfect tilth on top of previously prepared ground. Stones, clay, manure will all make the mantis struggle. We have lots of ground to cover so I then got a mtd double tine rotorvater, powerful piece of kit and great for larger areas. Then this week got another one, a triple tine honda. Not used yet but will save a lot of time next winter.
Nothing is better for creating that perfect tilth, and working fertilisers into the surface layers. Also for weeding between plants by just skipping it along than the mantis.
