November or December would be ideal for planting your garlic.
However, you take your chances.
You failed to state which part of Scotland you are in.
If you are in some remote part you have to trust your luck.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.

So do I. I buy from the really garlicky (linked already) whose product should be available from around now. I plant any time from the end of November until the end of January or even slightly later depending on a variety of reasons really. I recall the planting was on the very late side this year and we've had a brilliant crop.

Scotland has a wide-ranging variety of climates, can you narrow that down a bit more? If you were about to get snowbound for four months at the end of October, I'd advise planting sooner rather than later.

I live in the Scottish central belt and plant my Garlic in late September/earlyOctober.   There isn't much point in trying to plant anything when the ground is frozen, I believe it is better to have the Garlic in when the soil is warm enough to allow them to put down roots otherwise the bulbs may just rot in the ground.     You can start the Garlic in pots in January in a cold frame /unheated Greenhouse if you miss the September/October planting window.

Would be interested in any comments from other Sottish growers as there is more than one way to skin a cat.
Do you really need al that lettuce/

This is why I've asked the OP for a little more information about where they are. Here, I rarely get frozen ground and we generally have a very mild climate due to the gulf stream, you get frozen ground, others get months of snow...
