Just had my first Rhubarb of the year
« on: February 20, 2011, 23:17 »
I couldn't resist it .

Two of the old rhubarb plants, that I found overgrown on the site when I got it, have produced loads of lovely bright red stalks, many 5" or 6" long. I pulled about seven of the longest ones, spread over both plants and me and the missus had them with custard tonight.

Absolutely delicious! A wonderful perfumy flavour without any bitterness. All thanks to the previous plot holder.

But I'm wondering, will this be a problem? I might do it again in a couple of weeks but I don't plan to over pick. I have two other plants that will be ready to pick at the normal time this year (planted last spring and left unpicked).

I have four established Rhubarb crowns on my plot and I pick on a regular basis for most of the season. You've done well to get some this early,I reckon it will be another month before I'm trying any of mine. However,I'll be letting mine grow to at least a foot long before picking, but that is not to say you are wrong. Go for it and enjoy!  :)
