growing long carrots
« on: May 02, 2009, 00:05 »
you need the right seed to start with

ive done a lot of research on this
and i am now the proud owner
of these 3

st valery.....good length performer
japanese imperial long  .....my secret weapon
javelot..... for pure quality length and width

think big
if you want a 10 foot carrot use a 3 meter pipe to grow in
if you want a four footer use a six foot pipe.

i just can't resist a challenge as i listened to a fellow plot holder
talk of his legendery carrots
lol
wait till he sees my japanese babies:)

I'm really not quite sure how to respond to your post.

In truth, I'm wondering if perhaps you've had a good Friday night out and just needed to write some stuff?

Not impressed!

I would rather grow food to eat not to show
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

I would rather grow food to eat not to show

i eat all the food i grow
and the varieties i have chosen are for taste as well as length.

maybe next time i have some useful info i keep it to myself
is that how it works here:)

Ive no problem if you grow to eat and show...I think its good fun to grow a big veg once a year..this year the OH is trying for a giant marrow..next year it will be an onion (I hope!) Id like to see pics when you can  :D
"I think the carrot infinitely more fascinating than the geranium. The carrot has mystery. Flowers are essentially tarts. Prostitutes for the bees. There is, you'll agree, a certain je ne sais quoi oh so very special about a firm young carrot" Withnail and I

Thanks for facts george, you have given me great ideas for planting my carrots as I don't have very good ground to grow carrots of any length and had not thought about doing them in pipes - although did see an artical in a magazine lately that suggested growing them in old welly boots

Will by trying this v soon (not welly boots, pipes)  :)
I have a pair of secateurs and I'm not afraid to use them!!

thankyou for showing an interest
i found the whole subject very interesting as i searched for all the info
i grow little tasty carrots too.
but i don't disregard other growing methods such as growing in pipes as some kind of blasphemy.
my allotment is so small and it makes sense to me to take advantage of any vertical
growing area .
i'm going to use 3 foot pipes sunk  1 foot into the ground  as a border to my beds

Well, I think you can surely eat the long carrots after they have been shown?

Good luck with your Japanese specimens, and keep us posted.

I can't believe you bored holes in sand when you had a pipe set-up nearby that should have inspired you to dump the sand around them! They could have been pulled out once the sand had settled leaving you with holes for the soil. Crazy man  :nowink:
Good luck with the crop. Let us know how you get on.

What a nasty, nasty reply. I'd be thoroughly ashamed of myself if I wrote something like that!  :(
