Eggs laid outside the Coop
« on: March 08, 2010, 10:50 »
Some may remember my story of Lilly the Leghorn and her laying eggs where she pleases....well she has now taught the others to do the same

I found a clutch of 15 eggs (from 3 birds) in pile of dried leaves alongside my shed this morning... the little so & so's

My question is as they have been out in the open for 7/8 days, are they OK to eat...no cracks in the shells, a few with muddy claw marks but otherwise they look fine

TIA

pop then in a jug of water if they sink then they are fresh the closer they come to the surface the older they are :)you could try putting a golf ball in the nest boxes might give them the right idea :)

I must read things more carefully ... I must read things more carefully ....

then I wouldn't be sat here wondering how your hens got down to the Co-op ....   ::)

They were after the divvy
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

There are 3 Golf balls in the nest boxes...Lilly has only laid 2 eggs ever in there. now the others who know better are following her...sods
put the eggs in water and they seem OK

If Tikka and Peri were still with us, i am sure they would have walked to local Co-op...into Extreme Free Ranging those 2. Mate called one day last Summer saying my Chickens were out, i asked how he knew...he said he had just driven by on the main road and they were prining themselves sitting on the metal barriers beside the dual carriageway...

I have been getting 2 eggs a day from my girls - all laid in the nest box until today when got the usual 2 and I have just been out to the run and in the middle of the run was a slightly dirty egg just sitting there.  I have 5 hens and I know 3 have laid - perhaps this is a fourth?

2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.
