Garlic Troubles
« on: October 27, 2008, 17:16 »
Hi
I realised today that my garlic were far too close together and the I don't think you could call it a row.So I couldn't remember if they didn't mind root disturbance ? Anyway I lifted them up carfeully with a lot of trouble as well. Will they be ok ? Should I replant ?

Here they are:

Well I personally don't know if they deal well with root disturbance or not, but there's only one way to find out now...chuck 'em back in!

They'll be fine if you dig a deep enough hole and carefully set those long roots in first, gently firm in some soil, then firm in around the bulb itself. As long as those new white roots are secure and relatively straight in the soil they won't know that they've been moved.

thanks Trillium thats a relief, I have to say they are a variety called Violets that we brought back from France so I didn't expect anything of them as it is warmer there

Temperature really isn't a factor for garlic. But light levels is. However, I don't think your French garlic will suffer any ill effects. I do know, though, that some of the famous French garlic is very dependent on the French soil nutrients particular to those growing areas such as their famous red garlic. No idea if violet is supposed to resemble that colour, but it will grow even if it doesn't turn violet.
Just be sure your new planting holes are about 8" apart to ensure maximum growth.
