Pumpkin
« on: July 24, 2009, 19:34 »
Please can anyone tell me if my pumpkin has stopped growing? It is small (for a pumpkin) probably a little larger than a football and has turned yellow. Does that mean it has stopped growing, or will it continue to get bigger? It is the variey Jack of All Trades.

When they go yellow, they are ripe and won't grow any more.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oddly enough, I'm growing the same variety and they are going rampant with the weather.

Must have at least 6 fruit on each plant and expanding rapidly, I really must stop them.

One of mine has gone from light green to dark green & I guess it's ready to turn, but there's plently more coming.

I don't think it's so much early as people getting into the mind set that pumpkins = October. There should be more along later.

my pumpkins are growing like crazy, must be the right combination of wet and warm for them, but I'm nowhere near having anything to harvest - did start them off a bit late though

Plus the fact that Tattyanne is a bit further south.

ah, hadn't noticed that! Yes, it definitely makes a difference - my Dad's in Warwickshire and his garden is easily 3  or 4 weeks ahead of mine

That's why we find locations useful in profiles.

It has gone in your favour - you've got an early pumpkin!

I'm not clever, just been around a long time!

Give my regards to Dorset, go there several times a year & that was even before brother in law moved to Bournemouth.

If you want them to be fully ripe and keep, wait until the vine dies back and the pumpkin stalk starts to dry off. If you pick them too soon they can be watery and not have their full flavour.

I do have a problem with starting my seeds off rather early in the season....maybe thats why mine seem a bit further on in growth?
