Pear tree not in leaf
« on: June 04, 2010, 13:18 »
I planted a pot grown pear tree in March, it's a conference type, self pollinating - i was hoping it would make friends with the pear tree my MIL donated of unknown parentage but it doesn't look like pear love is in the air  ;)
It's done nothing, there are a few microscopic buds, no leaves. I broke off a small twig and it's definately alive, and green under the bark. Is it dormant, can I expect any growth this year? It has been well watered and fed, manure & bone meal in the planting hole etc, but wondering why it hasn't grown.

I once had a newly planted tree come into leaf in July...

Hang on in there!

Yep, hang on. Yours was likely in cold storage which takes quite a few months to bring it back into life. That plus the cool spring you've had didn't help.

You say it is definetely still alive so it will probably be the shock of moving it.  I'm sure it will pick up for you soon.

This winter I transplanted a plum, pear and apple tree into horse feed buckets on our decking. The plum and apple both burst into leaf and blossom and now both have developing fruit on.

The pear..... just a few spindly leaves. I since read somewhere that pears take a few years to get properly established. Hopefully next year your pear and mine will be a bit happier.....
