Hello again,

Can anyone recommend somewhere to bulk buy topsoil to fill the raised beds I'll be making? Just looked at the prices online and nearly had a heart attack 

I'd prefer if it was free though  no tight Scotsman jokes, please.

I would be very wary of free topsoil.  Chances are that it will be of poor quality, even subsoil, from an excavation for a building site.

I've bought quite a lot over the last few years and best places to try were landscape gardeners and farmers. You can get soil that's comes of veg when they're processing them. Think I paid about £8/ tonne when buying in bulk. Mail order suppliers charge the earth (!) so best to buy local.

I agree with Yorkie. Several friends bought low priced soil from a friend and the soil was filled with weed seeds that happily sprouted for the next 10 years. Every one regretted the thrifty purchase.

Seriously, is there a chance that you can get some turf, which you can lay upside down in your beds?

This is the base product for John Innes compost, and is such a great starter for any veg?

How much do you need?
