I was wondering if anyone knows which plants deer WON'T eat!
My parent's garden has been invaded for the past year or so and the deer have eaten nearly all the shrubs and flowers. THe only thing left is Hebe's and they've been wondering if there are any plants they don't like - maybe conifers or heathers?

Deer cause major damage to young conifer plantations - hence the 7ft high fences you may have seen.

Deer will eat young heather - see http://www.cairngormsmoorlands.co.uk/moorland_facts_and_figures.htm

Maybe potatoes (or hebe   )

Try this link : http://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/pdf/ec/ec1440.pdf

Fencing is the only real option to keep them out.  Rather than a full deer fence, maybe a regular fence with elongated posts every 2nd/3rd post.   A couple of extra strands of wire will then prevent them from jumping it - tie on bits of cloth / string so that they can see the wire.

Deer will eat almost anything, moreso if it's a dry year and they're desperate to fatten before fall. However, there are a few plants they're not keen on - but will eat if desperate. High fencing is still your best bet.
barberry, autumn aster, thorny blackberries, boxwood, cotoneaster, dwarf chinese holly, juniper, non hygrid lantanas, lavender, payracantha, rosemary, scotch broom, turk's cap, wax myrtle, hens & chickens, yucca, ageratum, begonia, rudbeckia hirta, chrysanthemum greens (will eat flowers), coreopsis, cosmos, dusty miller, foxglove, iris, periwinkle, purple confeflower, savory, verbena, yarrow, zinnia.

Now if we can find a way of shipping some deer meat down my way, we might have a deal         :)
It's all about the journey, not the destination
