Japanese Knot Weed
« on: August 18, 2007, 09:02 »
We have aproblem at out allotment site with the dreaded japanese knot weed. it has started to come through from the pub and the house next door to the pub, onto our entrance path. Have read the DOE publication which has lots of great advice. however it seems that there are only 2 ways to erradicate it. digging it out meaning going down 3 metres or industrial strength weedkiller. for us the industrial strength weedkiller would be an easier option. does anyone know where we might be able to purchase this and do we need to be licenced?
We have asked the council for their assistance but they say that because it's on the path its nothing to do with them. the Allotment association does not have the funds for specialist contractors. all suggestions/advice gratefully received.

I did a search of these forums and the name Clinic Ace has popped up a few times.  Click here

The search I used was as follows so you might find other info :
Search for Keywords: knot* *weed

there are laws to get this problem sorted . contact the council again and demand to know  who owns the pathway. if they wont help contact the county council highways . then if they fob you off write to the local paper and they will soon reply . the countryside act states that this is a enviromental hazard and is to be eradicated . so dont let the bods fob you off .threatening legal action for damage to your allotment will soon have em moving ...
still alive /............

Also try the land registry office they will be able to tell you the legal owner either by phone or internet.

When I found out it was the dreaded knotweed that comes up next to my path, I got no help from either the local Council nor DEFRA.  So I dug down as far as I could and dug it all out, but just over a month later it was back, further along.

We went to our local horticultural suppiers, and they were getting in another consignment of Clinic Ace, which according to another member on here, you shold only be able to get under license, but we had no trouble buying a gallon of it.  The price was £18.  Gave it a good dousing with that and haven't seen it back.  The only thing is Clinic IS strong, and will kill everything else it touches, so great care should be taken when using it.  It even killed the creeping buttercup on the front drive!

We have a problem with knot weed and although the council have been notified and have a department to deal with it, they haven't bothered. So the guy in charge explained the way to deal with it. Chop it right down in January and as soon as the new growth starts hit it with weed killer. That should see it off.
