getting rid of couch grass
« on: April 18, 2013, 19:18 »
Ive had some couch roots in a bin of water for a few weeks and keep topping it up with more couch as it rots down but its going to take a long long time.
Just looking for other ways to get rid of it.
Was thinking of putting a dalek on concrete and filling it with couch....it would rot eventually i guess.
The stuff in the bin bags is bursting through the smallest holes and appears to be growing happily
Is there anything i could put in with to speed things up?
Any advise/suggestions much appreciated

I've heard a black sack in the sun, the heat will kill it.

putting couch grass in bins of water is probably the best thing to do with it - as it will turn into liquid fertiliser in a few weeks. I guess having the bin in the sun will speed up the process.

It will certainly rot quicker in warmer weather

I lay often it out on the slabs to bake to death in the summer, then burn it: lovely crackly flames and you just know it was the right thing to do  :nowink:

I put couch grass in old compost bags and left it in the sun - after a year it's now turned into a sludge  which I will put back on the raised beds or into the compost bins.  Also put some in a black plastic bin with water which also rotted down after a while. Seems a shame to waste the nutrients and also we aren't allowed to burn anything on our site.

Agreed :)
How long did it take to rot in the plastic bin?

I filled up a bin, covered everything with water, put the lid on and looked after 6 months and there was a nice amount of well rotted sludge.  So I'm not sure how long it took but at most 6 months.

After 2 years I now feel I have the couch sort of under control - so I keep an eye out for it and can pull it out before it gets established.  Quite a nice feeling when you pull a whole strand out in one piece.

Black rubble sack or anything else black tied up and left outside works wonders for me. Even in a poor summer there are enough sunny days to thoroughly cook it to death.

Might try that then - I've enough stuff to burn without adding damp grass to it...

Been clearing my new plot of couch grass and I've been leaving shallow piles of the roots just on top of the soil, the sun/wind has shrivelled it all in just a few days, then can be bagged up/burnt/taken to local green waste. Its a pain in the ass to get rid of lol!
