not all cockerels get big - what breed of bird are they?
Staffies are softer than you think.

If you have something like Sasso's or Ross Cobbs they'll grow on whatever you feed them.

I have traditional breeds, Dorkings, Light Sussex, Cornish game, plus x's that sort of thing and I've never achieved a big loads o'meat table bird from them.

Yes the cockerels grow big, and altho there is a fair bit of meat on them its the carcass thats big. This is just from my own experience you understand. :)

I've tried a few fattening feeds and never found one that works better than another on the breeds that I have.  I even tried John Seymours bread and milk method on one lot  but couldn't see or taste any difference to the ones finished on growers.  :)

They are a mixture Joy, a RIR cross, a Light sussex cross, a cuckoo maran and a CLB. If I can't rehome them I thought I'd try growing them on for the pot, waste not want not so to speak. Will have to see how they go. I'm not expecting huge amounts of meat from them, thought even enough to make a pie lol.
Thanks folks x

I cull my boys and eat them - even if there is little meat on them at least I know how they have been kept and what they have been fed on. Those breeds though should give you a decent meal or two and should be ready for culling at aound the 22-25 weeks stage (if you can cope with their crowing until then - if not then try and wait until they are 16+ weeks).

Hi Tiggersmate,  If you keep them separately from the hens you can feed them on a rearer.  I'm not entirely sure what is available in the UK.  I get "poulet engrais pour poulet de chair" which is a fattener for meat birds.

For the final 4 weeks or so you can switch to a wheat or corn only diet - if you feed corn (maize) it will tint the skin and meat slightly yellow, if that appeals :)

if the rearers pellets have ACS added to them then you must stop feeding them to the cockerels at least a month before culling.
