Bedding materials
« on: May 18, 2009, 21:01 »
Hi all, need to get hold of my first lot of bedding and am having issues getting the 2large wood shavings" I have at the moment
are these ok or will they cause breathing issues?

Hi BigMark,
Wood shavings are fine so long as they are dust extracted. I personally use hemcore as this is very absorbant and barley straw in my nest boxes.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Most of the horse feed suppliers will stock big bales of bedding.  I use Jopack, and it's really absorbent and keeps the house dry and not smelly.  It rots down quicker that wood shavings too.  It's a bit more pricey but I use less in the long run.

I swear by Hemcore.  It is very absorbant, keeps oders down, and is easily broken down.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

I agree with Joyfull and LRH, hemcore is great and I use it with my ducks which are incredibly messy little things. Sorts out smells, absorbant and composts really quickly compared to shavings. Lots of people use woodshavings and are very happy with them.

Whatever you opt for you will be able to find cheaper than at Pets at Home.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
