Foxgloves
« on: May 29, 2015, 22:54 »
I have a semi shady spot between an old apple tree and a fence which is a bit boring (in a green kind of way) and I have tried to inject some interest this year by planting some white/cream foxgloves. When I bought them (in pots from a garden centre) I thought they were perennial and would come up every year. I have just found out they are in fact biennial . They are flowering now and are beautiful. Does this mean that they won't come up next year? And, if not, will they self-seed others or would I have to plant more every year if I want them again?

If they are happy they should self seed freely. They might revert to the usual pink though. Although l used to get white and pink so you may be lucky. Eventually you get them coming up every year. I used to need to thin them out they self sowed so freely.  :)

Mine self-seed all over the place - some pink, some white, and they don't seem to mind where they grow but they do prefer a slightly shady spot. After they have flowered, leave the flower spike on so it can make seeds and distribute them wherever they want. I love them!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

The seeds that fall in the Autumn will make plants to flower the following year. Seedlings in the wrong place are easily moved when small, or just uprooted.

We have foxgloves of all sorts of shades of pink and white, spotty and plain, and I think they are excellent.  :D :D

Thanks very much to you all. I will leave the seed heads on then and hope for more next year  :D.
