Plot available - do I take it??
« on: September 01, 2009, 15:20 »
I put myself on a waiting list for an independent allotment about 18 months ago and have just had a call to say there is a half-plot available for me.

I've since turned a fair bit of my garden over to veg growing and it has served me well over the summer. I'm not sure whether to stick with my relatively small-scale operation or whether to take the plot as well as use it for growing stuff in larger quantities and things that sit in the ground for longer and require less day-to-day maintenance, for example:

My garden:
- spinach
- lettuce
- herbs
- courgettes

Allotment:
- potatoes
- purple sprouting broccoli
- cabbages

Any advice?!

Most definitely. If it becomes too much then you can aways give it up, but I think you'll find you'll grow into it..( no pun intended ;)) personally I think you would be mad not to take it.

If you put your name on a list indicating that you want an allotment as soon as one becomes available. Then at that time (18mths ago) you had positive thoughts regarding gaining addition ground. But, if now you are having second thoughts!!!!!!!!! Do I? Do I not? Then there maybe somebody locally who is desperate of any piece of garden? Taking it and then say six months giving it up, is well!!!!!!

The limiting factor will be your time, not how many vegs you want to grow.  After one year you should have got addicted  :D but you also know how many hours you can squeeze out of the week.

Pots and leeks and onions and brassicas and squashes and parsnips don't ask much more than weeding once they are in ... but they do take a lot of space.  Things that have to be looked after (salads, herbs, tomatoes, strawbs) are better nearer home if you can.

Runner beans, broad beans, french beans, peas - now where to put them?

Yes, take it :)  You'll only regret it if you don't. Perhaps stick to potatos, leeks, onions and garlic. Brassica family esp PSB are very high maintenance for pest control and its depressing to watch them getting munched by caterpillars and then pigeons  Good luck
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

I'd take it, even if you do have it and then find it too much and give it up, presumely you'd have worked it a bit and probably left it in better condition for the new occupant.

Besides, I doubt anyone would give them up unless they absolutely had to because soon as things start growing it's brilliant!!

There are things you can grow that don't need loads of attention or you wouldn't have at home because they take up too much room.

I love my new plot even though it's a complete wreck still :o)  Got it about a fortnight ago?, complete disaster area with waist high weeds growing and filled 5 bin bags full of rubbish (nearly all cut-down water bottles, home made propagator things that were all cracked and split) and took them down the tip because the people didn't clear it even thought they'd said they would.  It's easier to do it myself!

Take it or regret it.

Half plot would mean that you could grow more or less everything you need. Agree with madcat salad stuff and other things that need more of yor time could be grown at home with the other stuff at the plot.
Try my best to be Organic but don't always make it

He he. Can't believe your even thinking about it.

Use your garden as a station for small stuff ie cut and go, Green House to get your seedlings away earlier & protection, Toms etc

The plot for your spuds, beans etc

Go for it as you will regret it.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

"Not sure what you are trying to say there Glosterboy? Is that a yes or a no"

What I am trying to say. Is that I have read numerous postings on this site referring to people who have gratefully, thankfully been given the chance to have a piece of land onto which to grow-my-own-veggies. This after again reading having to wait years for that offering letter/phone call.

There are still people out there desperately waiting!!

If anybody who has been offered gardening land who are unsure to take it or not? By asking for advice.

Then perhaps the need, keenest and enthusiasm, is not there!!
