I am struggling to understand the logic of water flow when connecting 2 water butts to a downpipe. 

I understand, I think, that I need to connect the down pipe to the butts at the maximum level I want the butts to fill to.

My question is - there is a window between the downpipe and the water butts.  Do I trail the pipe above the window or below the window?  Or can I do neither; it will have to go across the window?

Any advice will be gratefully received.

It is very rare for water to flow uphill 😄

Take the pipe below the window but make sure the connections at either end are level with one another, the butt will fill with water and when the level reaches the level of the down pipe diverter, I assume this is what you are using, then the water will no longer be able to flow into the butt and will go down the down pipe 😄😄

Are you using a Downpipe Diverter thingie? Like this:



If so you should be able to connect a hose to the Diverter, route the hose under the window (down to the ground, along, and back up is fine) and then into the overflow outlet of the waterbutt.

The diverter needs to be at the same height as the overflow on the waterbutt.

Thank you, that's good news - I was starting to think it would have to be straight across the window.  It sounds like I can do a quite neat job by running it down to the ground.
