Where to get hold of old windows/glazing?
« on: January 28, 2015, 23:11 »
Am building a DIY greenhouse on the allotment from salvaged timber, would like to get hold of some old windows/glass to incorporate into the structure to keep costs down. Anyone know where to source materials? Googling it proved pretty useless, am thinking of ringing up window companies and asking if they have any?

I used to do cleaning for a double glazing firm and they used to skip all the old windows etc.  If you can find any near you, I'm sure they would love you to take some of it off their hands.

Freecycle is another place where people get rid of all sorts!

I wouldn't ring but just call round, ready to pick up there and then.

I have a feeling that if you ring up, they can't see who you are, and it helps a lot to show a face. Certainly I've been far more successful that way.

Good luck with your build!

yes get the addresses and pop round and visit, it costs them money to dispose of the frames and glass, so they are generally happy to give it away, especially if you explain its to make a greenhouse and not in competition to their business.

Just call round to local places, alot are glad to get rid of it as they sometime get charges, its exactly how I built mine

Re-hosted a couple of the pics

Full windows including frames are better for the sides as you can just screw them together instead of having to make a wooden frame for them, and the bigger they are, the easier it is so try using french windows etc

as already said visiting any local glazing firms is worth a go.

freecycle can be good, and gumtree freebies and stuff wanted sections have been really good for me.

if you don't mind paying a bit of money then reclamation yards are worth a visit, haggle to get the price down if you want quite a few. also look through the gumtree diy section.
