sweetpeas
« on: March 25, 2009, 08:45 »
I have about a dozen sweetpeas in  4 inch pots, I know they need to be pinched out at the top to make them bushy - but methinks it's too cold to put them out yet?
I have got a small plastic greenhouse they could go in
do they need putting in bigger pots, there are about 3/4 per pot at the mo;
If i put in a few peastick twigs for them to climb onto, then
When should they be planted outside? I haven't quite cleared enough space for them at the plot yet,   :D  but plan to grow them up bamboo & string wigwams eventually, probably next to some runners.
ta!

I pinch tops out and leave them in the cold greenhouse, in same pots.

I find that the set back they receive from pinching back usually slows them up for a while and by the time they are growing away again i can plant them out :)

Exactly what I've done and they have slowed right down  :)

My sweet peas went out yesterday - despite pinching, they were getting far too leggy indoors.  I think they'll do OK so long as it's not too windy.

Can you help me with pinching out please?

Do I just dinch off the top part of the stem where the next new leaves are developing, back to the previous set of leves? Or do I pinch further back?

I've always pinched back so that there are two sets of true leaves left.
