Mushrooms
« on: February 18, 2008, 18:25 »
Hi everyone,

I'm always fascinated by programmes where they go out getting mushrooms from the wild, and there are load of logs on my allotment with some sort of mushroom on them.  BUT I have absolutely no clue when it comes to mushrooms and would love to know which ones are edible or not.

Any ideas what I should be looking for, or where to go to get them safely identified - or just eat them and hope we don't end up in hospital.

D xx

I'm quoting someones signature but i can't remember who .....

All mushrooms are edible, some only once!

   I think you should be extremley careful about picking your own maybe try a guided mushroom tour with an expert first!
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

First it depends on what tree the wood comes from, and what the "mushrooms" look like.  If you can borrow a book on mushrooms (eg Collins guides) you can usually get a rough idea because you can also check the season when they normally appear, what they grow on and compare the literature to the real thing.  Be warned some are so downright woody, they may be classed as edible but you'll probably break your teeth on them and find they don't taste nice at all!

As everyone advises, a good personal guide is needed to be truly safe.
