I've got a couple of dozen growing strongly in my polytunnel. They are now about a foot high and have been in for nearly 6 weeks after being bought as seedlings. I've tried these in the past in open ground but the roots never swelled. Any tips on how to get good fat globular roots?

They need to be well watered as Yorkie says, and personally I'd have thought they'd be way too warm in a polytunnel.

would it be a clue to point out that the wild ancestors were bog plants so watering is pretty well the best front runner as cause of non-development!

You also don't see many polytunnels in swamps.

not entirely unknown however to see a swamp in a polytunnel!

Incidentally, I've tried for three years in open ground (and Cumbria isn't known for arid conditions) and they've failed to fill up in our regular monsoons

Thanks Trillium. I didn't know about removing the side shoots and my soil is probably a little on the rich side for perfection, having been smothered in old horse muck before planting
