Thinking of a fig
« on: August 26, 2011, 15:10 »
I wanted to pick up a fig when Aldi had them on special, but by the time I got there they had all gone (assuming they had any in the first place).

Does anyone want to stick their neck out and recommend a variety and supplier ? I've seen them listed from £8 all the way up to £26.

Brown Turkey is the variety always said to be reliable in the UK.

Sunny spot with restricted root run is the key.

As for suppliers, we use R V Rogers from Pickering in this neck of the woods but there are many others around the country with a decent reputation.  Ken Muir is one that springs to mind.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have a sunken south west facing patio, which holds the heat well and gets plenty of light, I was thinking a large (30-50ltr) planter there ?

Ken doesn't seem to list the plant size on his site and if I remember rightly was right at the top end of pricing. (The website is down at the moment so I can't confirm)

They are really, really easy to propogate and grow very fast - so take a cutting of one that grows well in your area. Just bury a stick horizontally with the growing tip sticking out of the ground. Protect from the frost. The growing tip might die back, but it will shoot again the following spring. Expect some fruit after three years.

That's useful to know for future propagation but there's a problem with your cunning plan, can you guess what it may be  :D

You don't have any near you so you don't know which ones grow well in your area?

Here's the R V Rogers page; don't know how they compare in price.

I have just discovered a fig tree growing in a park near me, but obviously others already know about it as it doesn't have any figs on it,  :tongue2:  but I think I will take a cutting as my lovely puppies chewed mine down to a stump last year and it died  >:(
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

Just got a fig tree from Morrisons supermarket for £13, seems a reasonable punt
