winter cauliflower
« on: August 23, 2010, 16:11 »
hi all
i have just pricked out some winter cauliflower plants in the greenhouse  Peron and Longships to overwinter i nearly lost them to the b....dy slugs :ma  managed to save quite a few and disposed of the offenders  i know both my dads would set winter cauliflowers in the autumn to harvest the following spring they where lovely grub nice big yellow florets just the job with a bit of white sauce :)

i havent grown winter cauliflower for a long time that's why i need to seek your advise if you grow winter cauliflowers i know they planted them out on the plot to overwinter as they didn't have any greenhouses or poly tunnels i thought about either putting down the lottie under cover or pant them up in large pots in my poly tunnel till spring then set them out your advise would be much appreciated

I am not familiar with those varieties, but have grown several others in the past and this year.

They go straight into the plot and being fully winter hardy, the only protection they need is from pigeons, in my case.

Mine were planted out a few days ago before I left to go on holiday.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I happened to notice that the post had gone unswered for over a day, thought it deserved some sort of reply!

I'm with DD here (not on hols, unfortunately!) on the caulis, just put mine out last week, under pigeon/butterfly proof netting. Don't have your varieties, but mine include Andes, Haddin and Walcheren amongst others (DT Brown) which are all supposed to be fully winter hardy.

Just keep 'em safe from beasties and they should be fine...

Phill  :) :)

Having ahd a mini disaster with my origianl plants I managed to but nine for £1 at our loacl GS as they were 'making way for new stock', so hope to plant these out at the weekend.

Variety is unknown but they have to be better than the pigeon fodder I started with
