Broad beans flowering
« on: May 25, 2009, 17:37 »
Hi,
First time growing broad beans, should they be flowering already?

I staked them to huge cane pyramids and they have only grown to about 50cm and have tons of flowers on each!
I was thinking maybe they would flower early if they had got too dry but I didn't think it had been that dry until this weekend.

Yes broad beans should be flowering now  :D and some kinds don't grow very tall. If you still have the packet you could check .........................  :)

They are Bunyard's exhibition - doesn't say they are dwarf variety...

I overwintered some Aguadulce Claudia and they are already fully beaned - we had our first broad bean risotto today and it was delicious!  :D

The beans I planted in February have been in full flower for more than a week, some for two weeks. Enjoy!

They may seem small to start flowering, but in my experience the stalks continue to grow so that the pods will be more spaced out. I have just nipped the tops out of mine as there was the beginning of black fly infestation.

You may be confusing broad beans with runner beans.

Bunyards are broad beans which do not climb and only need propping with short stakes and string to stop them being blown over.

What a waste of canes
Actually I found info on the net that Bunyard's Exhibiton full height is 0.8m and I'd guess they are between 0.3 and 0.5m at the moment.

I'll remember that for next year!

Never mind -- the beans are doing well and you'll know next year  :)

Plant or sow some runner beans between your broad beans.  They will climb the canes and take over when the broad beans are finished.

Cheers,

Gillie
