How do I feed the chickens their scraps?
« on: September 10, 2010, 07:40 »
Can someone answer this probably very stupid question for me....I want to give the chickens veggie scraps from the kitchen how do I do it?  Do I cut them up into really small pieces or do I just chuck them in as they are and do they have to go in a dish or just on the floor?  Specifically today I have a lettuce stalk and a large leaf and a chunk of cucumber.  Also I would like to hang something like cauli stalks/leaves for them is that OK to just hang whole stalks for them to peck?  Thanks in advance.

all potato peelings need boiling but everything else can be given raw (never give them citrus) they don't need it chopping into small bits but if you have several chickens then chop it so they each can have some (although they will all want whatever bit the other has rather than their own  ::)). Hanging up cauli, cabbage or broccolli is a great way of giving them something to stretch up (put it slightly out of their reach so they either have to do a little jump or really stretch) and is a great boredom buster  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

I always would put the scraps etc. in a separate dish then what thet don't eat doesn't rot in the run.(technically it's illegal to feed kitchen waste to livestock.......ignore).

I know you can feed chickens the potoatoe peelings, but are you supposed to give them mashed or new tates? I have done on the odd occasion where we've had more than enough and have been wondering about it.

so long as they are cooked they can have any potatoes but I would hold off the mash if it is laden with butter and hold off with the chips
