I only took over my allotment a week or so ago,i spent all last weekend digging and iam adding manure this weekend, thing is i have onions, garlic and broad beans i need to plant asap,i know its a bit late for the onions, but its pretty mild for november and they only just arrived.

The thing is i no not to put manure on root veg bed, but i have been reading that you shouldnt put it into a bed you are about to plant straight into, for garlic onions and broad beans.....iam  now unsure what to do,the soil has a lot of clay in it and really needs the manure its ph is about 7.2.should i dig the manure in or leave it out??? :?:  :?:  :?:

Also just wanted to say how pleased I am i found this forum, everyone is so helpfull...x

Strictly speaking these are not roots, Dione, you're all right. :)

And welcome :D

I'd never advocate putting fresh cow/horse/sheep/pig manure on anything except comfrey or a compost heap.

I'd never advocate putting chicken/pigeon manure on anything except comfrey or a compost heap.

Any reply of mine which mentions manure for use on veg patch is aged cow/horse manure.  :D

That's what I thought. But as Dionne never mentioned it being rotted, I thought I'd check.

Cheers  :D

Can't help you there 'cos I'm organic.  Manure has got phosphates too

Usually you'd feed from mid-Spring until a month before harvest.
