Yuk!

I remember a couple of years ago I was looking after my parents' house while they went on holiday and went down one evening to check all was well.  As I walked outside to close up the cold frame, I saw something on the lawn - there were hundreds of slugs.  I've no idea why they were all there on the lawn, never seen anything like it - it was a big carpet of slugs.

I dashed inside for a big tub of salt....

Luckily by the time they got back from holiday, all the dead slugs had withered away.

I think my mum's hostas were grateful  :)
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

Here's a bit of useless information for you, according to Cardiff School of Biosciences, Britain has the highest number of slugs in the world, perfect weather conditions apparently! Jude

get chickens - they will get rid of the slugs
On second thoughts don't as they also love tomatoes, sweetcorn, cabbages, cauliflower etc etc  ;) In fact they loved everything I tried to grow last year  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Toads... we definitely need more of them - they don't eat veg and they do eat slugs.  ;)

Is there a good recipe for slugs....seems such a waste of an abundant resource.
Soup for wives and kids perhaps ?

That's only because you don't count the blades of grass and weeds every time you look at them like you do with your carefully cultivated seedlings.

Send all your slugs to me, they make great fishing bait! But make sure they are wrapped well, don't want them escaping in posties bag :D
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I got into considerable trouble once - not over slugs but snails... same thing with a roof.

As a student teacher my class-on-loan set up a habitat for snails. It sounded a safe idea at the time as the snails didn't bite, were unlikely to smell (too much) and could be gathered for free so "we" went ahead with the idea.

The children did some great work - research, writing, observation, art and science - maths too I suspect... (long time ago).

When I completed my time at the school the snails were returned to the wild and the library loan back to the college library.

Three weeks later - call from the irate librarian as one or more of the snails had eaten through chunks of some expensive reference books all about snails!! They appear to love paper!  I was very nearly landed with a big bill..  :(

I recommend ducks for slug clearing - they seem to be a lot less given to wanting a share of the vegetables as well.
