failing bare root strawberry plants
« on: April 17, 2014, 20:13 »
i purchased 3 varieties of bare root strawberry plants (12 of each variety) just after Christmas. i potted them up into plant pots in MP compost immediately and have had them in the poly tunnel since.

one variety has had 100% success and have been planted out with flowers on them.

the other 2 varieties have done nothing. (one growing out of 24).

all 3 are summer varieties (buddy, sweetheart, elsanta) so i would expect them to grow at roughly the same time.

is there anything i have done wrong? or anything i can do to improve the situation? will they come through eventually or are they likely to be dud?

i have e mailed the supplier and they said i should see growth by may/ june, but i have a feeling they may be just stringing me along a bit.

thanks for any advice or views.

Buddy is an ever-bearer, so if you are lucky... they would behave differently.

I'd have thought you should see some growth before May-June. Did you plant them with their crowns just above the surface of the compost? If so, have a little furtle and see if they have rooted ok. It doesn't explain the ones that are growing ok though - mmmm.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

yes. planted with the crown just above the surface.

i got impatient yesterday and took one out of the compost and looked for signs of roots and absolutely nothing.

i'm now wondering if i should just plant them in the bed thats ready for them. worried i may be over or under watering?

Lucky I looked at this post, put in 30 strawberry plants today, was given them, as I planted them noticed some brown round small (thought eggs) in the roots and soil, Oddpod said vine weevil, so I Goggled it and then the eggs, and hey presto pic came up with the brown eggs, so lucky I put them in bare root, will go back 2morrow and make sure I get rid of all that soil with the eggs inside it

I put in 30 Maria de bois (?) Ever bearers a few weeks ago. About half look to have died so far . They didn't look that healthy to begin with. At the time thought about returning then to marshals but never grown bare root strawberries before so just went for it . Regretting it now.
