Is it the heat?
« on: June 17, 2023, 15:29 »
After my last post about non flowering alderman peas, the lowdown is that they had a mad rush of doing so, and those are now young or quite mature pods. But that seems to be it! The plants look like they are giving up for the year, and there will be no more after these get picked.......so has the hot dry weather done for them?

What is your local weather forecast for the next couple of days?
I was very impressed by the effect of a storm whilst I was away on holiday.
My peas loved the rain.
Keep digging

Here in Belgium they keep teasing us with forecasts of rain that never arrives!

I have found that many plants this year are growing very slowly and think it's more likely heat stress as they've been regularly watered My snap peas are now getting on with producing pods and we're due for rain today and next week.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

You say the plants look like they are giving up. Are your plants yellowing etc.?  If so, they may be done.  However, if they are still nice and green, I'd try waiting through that forecast rain and see what they do.  As others have said, they may bloom and produce again.

Yes, thunderstorms are predicted for this part of Northants. My pea plants look to be on their last legs though. Yellowing and a bit sickly. I have watered as best as I could. It will be interesting to see if a good downpour revives them.

If they are yellow and sickly, I can't offer much hope, except to say I hope I'm wrong.  Good luck with them.

Thanks for hope at least subversive. On the top of everything, is it true that you can cut pea plants back to ground level, and with luck they flourish again?

I've never tried that, nor have I heard of that, but if you're in the mood for an experiment, why not give it a go!

I will say I have experience with a broad bean plant getting frosted down to ground level and sprouting back out again from the crown; I hadn't heard that Broad Beans could do that!

I’ve heard it of broad beans, but never had much luck doing this after they have produced beans. Suspect the peas won’t do much. Might be better to just sow some quick maturing peas.
