Yorkie saved the day
« on: May 21, 2013, 19:17 »
Thanks yorkie, I now have some seeds for the runner beans, hubby is putting them in right now. Why Somerset seems to be a bean seed free zone right now I don't know.

Everyone cross their fingers and legs and let's hope we see a bean, I have never been so rubbish with runner beans EVER  ::)

I blame the compost, these are going straight in the soil.

Thanks again.  :D

Blimey, that was quick - they only got posted yesterday lunchtime!

Glad they got there in one piece (the packet was a prezzie but I don't like RBs, so really pleased they went to a good home!)  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I am not a huge fan of the bean BUT I make a bean chutney that hubby has withdrawal symptoms for.  ::) he'd eat a jar a time. Lol he doesn't eat much veg but if it's in a chutney he eats it all.

You'll find runner bean chutney recipes in the cooking board, in fact BQ's recipe is probably there. :D I'm not able to post a set of search results for you to view.

Also, in the recipe section of the main website. :)

I couldn't find it listed so I will check my messy box later

I did however find my cranberry chutney recipe which my 15 year old has been asking for non stop for ages. I thought I'd lost the recipe  ???

 Runner Bean Chutney
should work for French beans too ...

2 lb. (900g) runner beans. stringed and chopped or sliced
2 lb. (900g) demerera sugar
one and a half pints vinegar, I use malt or White I am not fussy
1.5lbs. (675g) onions, peeled and chopped
one and a half tbsps. cornflour
half a tsp. salt
1 tsp. turmeric
1 tsp. mustard powder

1. Cook the beans in salted water till just soft

2. Cook the onions in half a pint of vinegar until just soft

3. Place the beans, onions and sugar in a pan together with the remaining vinegar and boil for 15 minutes

4. Mix the mustard, turmeric, salt and cornflour with a small amount of cold water and add to the pan

5. Bring to the boil and cook for a further 15 minutes
6. Allow to cool slightly before putting in sterilised jars

It's all over the net this one so maybe mil didn't make it up lol I feel better about it now. It wil no longer be "mother's chutney"  ::)

Online some people say it only lasts a year which is rubbish I made about 100 jars the year we married and hubby finished the last off some 9 years later, lol I wouldn't recommend making that much but the barrows of beans came free
