We did it!  The council backed down this week and told us at the monthly council meeting that the plots would be handed back to us  :D  They said months ago they'd relented but did nothing about it and continued to allow the site to fall into a weedy mess.  We took matters into our own hands, in the summer and got a farmer to cut the resultant hay , but as they continued to sit on applications, and a waiting list of 25 people, nothing was done. We plugged away since then and have finally got a cave-in  :D

So I'd say to anyone threatened with closure, fight for all you're worth.
We're going to mark out some new plots on the huge swathe that had been ringfenced for development. Woohoo

Really good news CQ. If the little people don't stand up for their rights, developers will swallow up everything in the name of greed.

Just playing devils advocate here and I don't want to dampen the victorious effort you all obviously made, but maybe the developer pulled out of the site if it was ear marked for building on, what with the impending recession  :?

Good effort guys, as said if all the little people shout together we make a much bigger noise  :D

The plots have been in cultivation since 1898, we have a waiting list, the site is lovely and we just couldn't see it go so it just had to be fought for.  We knew it was totally wrong so we went for it  :D

We still have another hurdle to face and that's securing their status  :(

We're all battle hardened so ready for the next phase and we hope now that the council will finish the job and declare us to be statutory. The council did declare them Statutory in a national return in 1994 but since then they changed their mind, saying that they'd filled the form in wrong

It's always possible, but I've often found developers will likely go ahead anyway and then claim a lot of loss deductions on their business incomes, etc. if it doesn't work out. They don't even consider that they've ruined valuable growing land or ruined wild habitats.

The economic slump certainly helped us as it's given us the breathing space to fight our corner
