Bought coop - what next?
« on: March 10, 2011, 18:12 »
Hi I've just bought my first coop after months of agonising. Very excited!  :D Have yet to clear the garden and build huge run before i put coop together. Just thinking ahead but would it be an idea to tile floor to make it easier to clean or would the grout be too porous and allow red mite in. Or maybe its just a daft idea altogether. Is there anything i should do to the coop while it's still in sections to treat/prepare it or when I've put it together before the chickens go in. Many thanks in advance. :D :D

Grout would crack; how about flexible floor tiles or, better, a sheet of floor covering. Easy to clean and can be taken out for a scrub. We used PVC floor tiles which are great. Don't think it makes any diference to red mite though. I'd suggest that, rather than trying to seal out mites, you make everything pull- apart and cleansable so you can use Ficam / diatomaceous earth.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Was thinking about sealing all cracks etc but then i realised i'd need to take it apart to clean it. Doh! Might get some of that wax you paint on to garden furniture to finish it tho' cos that might stop them getting into knotholes etc and will weatherproof it a bit. :D
