sorry....squash again
« on: July 30, 2009, 16:08 »
hi all.
Everyone on here keeps going on about their butternut squashes going mad and trailing all over the place, but mine are doing nothing.
They are by no means dead, but have only grown a little bit since I planted them out.
There are 3 plants in about a 3m x 2m bed and they have been in for about 4 weeks.
Should I give up on them? ???

Squash do that and suddenly make a dash for it.

Where abouts are you Janet. A location would help, South of England will be a lot earlier than the north of Scotland!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My butternuts are really slooooooow this year too ... taking ages to put on any growth. The pumpkin, on the other hand, is invading everywhere

Me and my pathetic squash are in Birmingham so in the middle.  ::)
Huge amounts of rain lately, but they are not flooded or anything.

After I planted my squashes and pumpkins out, they sat in the ground for ages (3 weeks or so) looking as if they were doing nothing - then they took off, and now I'm sure if I sat and watched them, I could see them grow! I think maybe they spend a bit of time concentrating on getting new roots in, then they do all the above-ground stuff ...?
