Over Winter Onion Sets
« on: April 10, 2014, 17:32 »
Hi All,

Was just up at the plot tidying out the onion bed and discovered that I have lost about half the over winter onions.  On my way home I popped into Been and Queued and picked up a packet of 80 onion sets.  My question is can I plant these in the spots where I lost the over winter ones or should I plant them in new rows and leave the gaps?  I still have some of the over winter ones left is it too late to put these in?

I put my sets in a few days ago. They should be fine to go in now. Personally I would fill in the gaps as that is wasted space if you just leave it.

You have some overwintering sets left? yes its too late to put them in, you need a spring planting variety for this time of year.

If you fill the gaps with new onions sets now, they will be spring ones obviously as Eightball said; the Autumn planted ones will be ready to harvest from May onwards, possibly June, whist the Spring planted ones will not be ready until September and you will have gaps where the Autumn ones have been harvested.

All depends on when the gaps are least inconvenient I reckon..

i think i will fill the gaps now with the spring onion sets.  When the over winter ones come out I can fill the gaps that they create with scallions (spring onions).

Thanks for the advice

I would take the overwintering onion sets left over, and throw them in the bin.
If you want to grow from sets as opposed to seed, put them in the spring. Much more reliable.
