Looking for cheap containers for Potato & Growing.
« on: January 17, 2012, 21:42 »
Hi there.

I was wondering if anyone had an idea what containers I could buy to grow Potatos in.
I'm looking to cover an area of 14 metre squared of 28 containers.

I already have 50cm high raised beds + cloche covers for a portion of the garden next to
the PolyTunnel. Im just looking for some big tubs or barrels which I can move about.
Myself & My Brothers are strong enough though to lift them so weight isn't a problem.
Well it is sorta since we actually weigh a lot our selves lol.

I did think about cutting up some IBC totes 1000 litre totes which sells around £15-30 but Im looking for a cheaper alternative.

And there free old ones that is  :D
Give me a sense of humor, Lord,
Give me the grace to see a joke,
To get some humour out of life,
And pass it on to other folk.
Happy new year to you all xx

Could you look out for some used ton gravel/sand bags or are they too big.Or pound shops etc often sell bags to grow in.

You'd need a ton of compost to fill them and it'd be hard to tip them out / find the spuds in them.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You can grow spuds in virtually any sort of container. I've used everything from the 10 litre flower buckets to old fertilizer sacks and a wheelbarrow. Being a Yorkshireman with an aversion to spending money I just use whatever I can find lying around.

Many of the people who grow potatoes for show/exhibition use the 17 litre polypots.

Morrisons do big pots that they have previously used to store their cut flowers in and get rid of them 8 for 99p which works out pretty good. Always ask for the biggest ones. These are just about big enough for a spud each but do need regular watering and feeding. I often use them after cutting the bottoms of for things like toms in growbags to add more depth to the soil. They are worth getting at the price.

14 metres squared (ie 196m2) or 14 square metres? Guess it's the latter! Blue barrels are an option I suppose, especially if you can find a supplier who'll sell you damaged ones cheap - after all you only need the bottom half...

If I needed to, and ran out of my biggest pots.  I've used the bags which my potting compost comes in.  They are black inside so don't let any light in to make the potatoes go green.

I used the Morrisons large "bag for life" (39p I seem to remember)
They worked well but on year two, they bio-degraded!
When I was younger I used a full size plastic dustbin with holes in the bottom and got really good results, mind you have you seen the price of them now?!!
