Onions - so how big are they?
« on: August 12, 2009, 10:40 »
Last year there were a few threads on big onions - just wondering what success people had. I am sure vegmandan will have some of the biggest but what about the people who were just growing them outside. I had reasonable success but unfortunately was away on holiday for 3 weeks july/august and wasn't there to protect them from caterpillars that ravaged the leaves  >:(

When people give the weight are they talking dried off, or with leaves still attached?

edit : grown from kelsae seeds bought at wilko, sown start of january and planted out about march/april.

All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Wahey !!!
Got to 7lb 9oz so far and this was the last of the mouldy ones.

Got 3 more still growing which are bigger and bug free.

So maybe I might just manage a ten pounder !!

TBH i usually find big onions to be a bit mild, but good in sarnies and salads.

No one else got any biggish onions

Ours are still growing. They aren't as big as that. This year we have tried some from seed as well as our usual sets. Very impressed with the seed onions (Ailsa Craig).
