what potatoes next?
« on: August 13, 2009, 10:26 »
i have just cropped my potatoes for the summer which turned out ok although i think i didnt  space them apart as much as i should, and am wondering if anyone can suggest what variety to plant now for harvest over the winter.
Was looking at maris piper as i want an all rounder for mashing , baking, roasting etc, but am open for sugestions!

also, what spacing shoud i use?. i used on my last batch 1 foot (12 Inches) but i dont think its enough.

any help on this would be grand

Many thanks

You're too late really. Main crop spuds go in at the same time as the other ones, they just take longer to grow. You probably won't be able to get any now anyway. If you've got a few left over you could try some earlies in a pot which might give you a crop at Christmas.
Earlies are about 1' apart, main crop a bit further.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
