New Allotment what can i do!
« on: November 22, 2015, 03:44 »
i get my allotment in two weeks time, is it worth trying to turn it over and manure it mid december? or would it be best left alone and just use it as best as i can in the coming growing season?

I'm very new at this allotment lifestyle lol so i might be trying to run before i walk here!

im just see everyone preping for the upcoming season and im starting it all mid december!

and tips and advice would be welcome,

Thanks
Gary

Yes, it's definitely worth getting as far as you can so long as the mud isn't sticking to your boots.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes - turn it over, weed as you go and add old or new manure on top to cover it over winter. As you work it, take note of the type of soil you have, whether it drains ok (if not, add some grit as you dig), what will be in full sun and in part-shade during the summer, and make a little plan in a notebook of what veg you want to grow and where. Don't be too ambitious - just keep it simple for now and enjoy!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

when it gets too muddy, I wait for a good frost and attack it with the rotovator.
we do the impossible daily, miracles take a little longer.

Hello and welcome to the world of allotments. Whatever you decide to do, take it slow and easy. You won't enjoy it if all your muscles and bones ache!

Thanks for the replies!, yes this first season i just want to keep it simple to see if my back can cope, the ground looks pretty good from what i can see over the fence, it just needs a good weeding, its not loaded with long grass, ill upload a picture when i can fathom it out lol

It looks lovely. The tall fence running down the right-hand side casts a fair bit of shade, but some plants will like that.

What's growing in the far left-hand corner? Is it something you can harvest this autumn and winter? If so, that's a bonus.

On the sowing front, you might still be in time to plant some garlic and onions, possibly even to sow some broad beans if you like them. Someone else more up your way will be able to say.

Hi Snoop

On the left, halfway down is empty beds with weeds, then at the bottom left corner is potatoes then Swedes, then at the bottom is sprouts.

On the right side at the top is spring onions, the rest of the way down is weeded.

i have to wait for the tennant to pull up his harvest which is going to be in the next two weeks, then he is handing me the keys (he has paid up till April but giving me the keys early)

Good that you can have access to the plot before April, as you'll be able to get cracking on all those lovely tasks... digging and weeding.  :) But you'll have a good head start when spring comes around. Good luck.

Welcome to the site, Axe!

How is your plot facing in relation to north/east/south/west, and what's the wind conditions like where you are?
I may be Welsh, but I love ewe anyway!

The Plot is south facing so it gets plenty of sun all day long :)

Bit of a nightmare at the moment as the gentleman who was given it up, now feels better and might keep it :(  so im just playing the waiting game to find out if whats going on (i think he is clutching at straws hoping he might get better but the guy i spoke to said he cannot manage it anymore).

Either way, aslong if he enjoys his plot im not going to force him off, i'll keep you all posted :)
