Pelleted Carrot Seed
« on: January 24, 2015, 09:22 »
This year I am going to try some pelleted carrot seed, it is an early Nantas. Ok to be totally honest I hate thinning out the carrots, was thinking this could be a good idea . Has anyone else used these, I was just thinking if so how did you get on with them, did they germinate ok, and was there much thinning to be done,
Many thanks.

I like the pellets as it avoids much of the thinning ,ive also used seed tape which was also good for the same reason

Last year I made my own seed tape for carrot .. it's quite easy. Y

ou just need some very cheap toilet roll.

Divide what will probably be 2-play into single ply paper

Fold up, say 10-15 squares, then cut along to get two long 2inch wide strips (easier cutting while paper is folded and quicker too)

Fold over this long thin strip of paper to get a crease, then open up again

Make up a glue paste .. equal parts flour and water

Dab a wee amount of glue at 2-4" spacing (whatever you want) .. place one seed on each glue bob (for other seeds where thinning is OK, maybe add 2 or 3 seeds per 'station'

Fold over the paper and flatten .. the glue will hold the two pieces of paper together and will secure the seed too.

lay somewhere to dry out

Store until needed

Sew (NOT ON A WINDY DAY) ..cover paper with thin layer of compost

Water well

The water breaks down the glue and the seeds can germinate

By the way .. it's easier sewing seeds this way, on the kitchen table, with a cuppa, piece of cake and the radio turned on than in the open air

Have a look on Youtube .. there are quite a few clips

Thanks for the tip on making your own carrot seed tape . I plan on making some for my Eskimo carrots this year.
By the way I did some germination tests on the pelleted seed, I stuck some in the propagator with my Chiles and can confirm that it is one seed per pellet.
Once again many thanks for all your replies.
